Medical Treatment of Endometriosis: An Overview

Pain caused by endometriosis can significantly impact your life. Fortunately, medical treatment is an option that may be able to provide you with the relief you deserve.

The medical treatment of endometriosis depends on the symptoms you are experiencing. In many cases treatment can start without confirming the diagnosis.

Hormonal treatments

Oestrogen and progesterone combinations

  • the combined oral contraceptive pill

Progestins

  • medroxyprogesterone (oral or as a depot in Depo Provera)

  • norethisterone

  • etonorgestrel (Implanon)

  • levonorgestrel intrauterine device (Mirena)

  • dienogest

Pituitary Hormones

  • GnRH agonists and the newer GnRH antagonists that may be useful and effective

Be aware that none of the hormonal treatments can be used if you are trying to have a baby, although some of them are sometimes used as part of an ART cycle.

Non-hormonal medications

Non-hormonal medications such as non-steroidals and panadol are the foundation of pain management. Tranexamic acid can help if you have heavy bleeding.
